Hebgen Lake, / Earthquake Lake, Montana
Meeting the Hebgen Lake Strangler
Spending a week in Yellowstone was wonderful. I've waited a lifetime to see it and need to go back for a month but coming fall won't allow that. The Beartooth Hwy we drove going to Yellowstone will be closed for winter snows in less than 3 weeks. The bears have gone to high country and the elk males shriek calls to their sows at night for rutting season. Yellowstone late fall is magnificent.
There's another week before heading back from Salt Lake City. Until then... my kinda road trip; let's see the most you can in a week of western Montana and northern Utah.
Out of Yellowstone on the West / Madison entrance into West Yellowstone -- a mile out of the park. And it's wall to wall tourist crap. Inside Yellowstone there is no commercial development-- thank god-- but one foot out of the park you can put up a Waffle House on every block. Think of what Panama City looks like... or Gatlinburg outside of the smokies.... you get the idea.
Heading up Hwy 287 to see some places like Virgin City, Nevada City, Beaverhead Rock and Dillon, MT is the next leg of this journey.
About 10 miles up Hwy 287 we come to "Earthquake Lake" ... AKA Hebgen Lake. I stop at a pullout and begin looking around,... take a few pix, read the historical marker sign. A Sept 1959 earthquake at the Madison edge of Yellowstone" shook and sheared off the side of a mountain here. The mountain slid down and dammed up the Madison river.... while covering a few cabins and a campground along side the river. The wrong place at the wrong time.
The river backed up to "make" a new lake ; Earthquake Lake,... immediately downriver from Hebgen lake.
When I come back to the overlook, T-bone is talking to another visitor. ?or is he a visitor? While taking a few more pics i overhear the conversation.
The alledged "visitor" sure does know a lot about this place. He knows too much. 50 years of history too much. About pointing over to where the campground bodies were never excavated... some of the families names, ect... Too much knowledge.... in a mad scientist way.
I should have known... T-bone has this knack of making "friends" real easy. And also every dillweed, dipwood, nerd, neurotic, psychotic, OCD, or strange person is drawn and will wind up talking w/ her.
Driving away in a few more minutes I felt relieved; I'd evaded the Hebgen Lake Strangler. T-bone said he was a nice man. Sure, ... from the mcabe look in his eyes / face... & toooooo much knowledge of death here.... the tone of his voice in describing the buried camping / fishing families.... He probably already had staked out a place to hide a body.
I think living that decade in Florida was school for spotting weird people. I could be wrong. There was a picture of the strangler, but somehow -- and I won't name names-- that pic got deleted... so that person is still at large.
You never drink twice from the same stream.
