Yellowstone Tracks of the StoneBear
Sept 08
Mirror Lake Hwy 150 Utah
Salt Lake City, Utah to Evanston, Wyoming
ROAD TRIP !!!!! It's good to be back on the road again. This Tracks of the StoneBear journey is gonna be a good one. I can feel it... I can smell it in the air. The West is one of my favorite stomping grounds and driving the backroads is always fun.
***
Plan for the 1st leg
Flew to SLC - Salt Lake City, rental car & head out. Unita Mtns UT Mirror Lake hwy scenic byway to Evanston , North into Wyoming/Utah line. Hayden peak 12,500' overlooking Mirror Lake. Bear River, *** more later on this as I almost had my lights cut out before my time-- my 9 lives have one less.... I'll talk about this when I gain my composure -- Bear Lake. Paris Idaho & pioneer Mormon church bldg. Starr valley & up to Jackson hole. Grand Tetons... & they are grand. Hiking around Jenny Lake almost walked into a moose-- 25 ft close. Rafted down the Snake river & learned the water & rights belonged to Southern Idaho potato farmers. Signal Mtn -- this was a post synopsis of the 1st leg of this journey.
****
This journey is to fly to Salt Lake City and head north to Yellowstone. Arriving mid morning at Salt Lke City, get a rental car... this one is a Toyota Camry; it will do. Drove out of SLC, will see SLC and the Mormon square / tabernacle ect on the back end of the trip. let's don't waste time here; let's get on the road into the west.
Interstate to Park City, Utah and stop for road trip supplies. The ski slopes are in the background of the shopping center. I'm not a skier so jump down through Kamas, UT and head out north on Hwy 150east into the Wasatch national forest... AKA the Mirror Lake Hwy. Immediatly started driving up into the Wasatch Back mountain range.... stunningly beautiful "The West"... this is what I came for. This is Open Range country where ranchers cattle graze on the open range until the fall roundup.
Mountain streams,... rock formations that are amazing.... there's nobody out here. No traffic.
Wasatch is a Ute indian word that means "mountain pass" or "low pass over high range and ascending up the range the air is getting thinner as we're up about 9,000' elev now.
We come to a pass and this towering mountain. ... have seen this mountain for the last 30 miles. Majestic. Towering. Powerful. It is Mt Hayden. Hayden was an early pioneer / explorer / surveyor.
Stopped at a turnout and it is breathtakin beautiful. Looking down through the western pines is a beautiful lake; Mirror Lake. Deep breaths of pure mountain air. This is a pristene, serene beautiful place. The silence is deafening. This is the place to drop / spread some ashes-- the 1st of many places-- of a good firend that has gone on ahead. Curt's spirit will be here for eternity in a fitting place.
Driving down the mountain a mile or 2, come to Mirror Lake. Appropriately named... calm water is a sheet that reflects Mount Hayden. Beyond description.
Let's head on north and try and make it to Evanston, Wyoming by nightfall.
