Cody, Wyoming Labor Day

Yellowstone Tracks of the StoneBear

Sept 09

Cody, Wyoming Labor Day

It's Labor Day... Yellowstone was booked up, so headed east on Hwy 14 / 16 / 20 and holed up in Cody. It's a holiday so let's see whats here.

Started out on the west end of town below rattlesnake hill.... at Coulters Hell... the fumaroles and hot springs around the Shoshone River near town. it looks like dessert... high dessert, arid plain with mesa buttes of red rock strata overlooking.

Nearby is the cody old western town... very well preserved western shanty town.

Nearby is the Cody Rodeo, .... the Cody Stampede.... rodeo stands. This is one of the best rodeos in the west. Every night during summer months June through August.

The Shoshone River runs along the edge of town and you can see real cowboys and ranchers all through town. I liked the horse trailer with the family name painted on the side... Now that IS pride! Pride in their family... pride in their work with cattle and livestock. I love the west. You can trade and do business with these guys; they're 4 square.

A lot of sculptured bronze art downtown. Some real artisans make home here. Some phenomenal work displayed all throughout town.

And a short tour through the Buffalo Bill Historic Center. *** Warning*** If you go to the Buffalo bill Historic Center.... you need a couple days -- no joke,... full days -- to see this proper. There are 5 sections of historic western artifacs of western history and you can't see it well if you run through it. give yourself some time. The western gun section... has 3,000 firearms of the guns that won the West on display.... and there are 3,000 more in storage unseen. There are native American weaved blankets and linens for sale from local indian artists. this is a really wonderful museum.

Then about 5pm you round up downtown next to the Irma hotel and you can see when the McCartys,... or the McClarins walk down the street into town and shoot it out with the sheriff. Today it was a few western outlaws... George Pike, Jack Ketchum, Harvey Logan AKA Kid Curry, and Will Carver that came into town to make trouble. Until they met up with the sheriff and deputys Tom Skinner, Tom Horn, and Roll Gardner.

Amid the smoky gunpowder from the shootout.... that's the outlaws on the ground. The West is a great place. Black and White are very clear and defined.... we need more of that today.
