Mirror Lake hwy150 #2

Yellowstone Tracks of the StoneBear

Sept 08

Evanston, Wyoming

Mirror Lake, Utah to Evanston, Wyoming

ROAD TRIP !!!!! It's good to be back on the road again. This Tracks of the StoneBear journey is gonna be a good one. I can feel it... I can smell it in the air. The West is one of my favorite stomping grounds and driving the backroads is always fun.
***

Flew to SLC - Salt Lake City, rental car & head out. Unita Mtns UT Mirror Lake hwy scenic byway to Evanston , North into Wyoming/Utah line. Hayden peak 12,500' overlooking Mirror Lake. Bear River, *** more later on this as I almost had my lights cut out before my time-- my 9 lives have one less.... I'll talk about this when I gain my composure -- Bear Lake. Paris Idaho & pioneer Mormon church bldg. Starr valley & up to Jackson hole. Grand Tetons... & they are grand. Hiking around Jenny Lake almost walked into a moose-- 25 ft close. Rafted down the Snake river & learned the water & rights belonged to Southern Idaho potato farmers. Signal Mtn

****

Heading north on Mirror Lake Hwy 150east... actually heading north.... Leaving Mirror Lake and heading into the Utah Plains. Through aspen tree stands into north Utah ranch country is really good. some plains / hills of sagebrush.

Then we come to Bear River.

Now after a few years i can finally have the composure to address this. Bear river... the Bear River Ranger station... is where I almost got my lights cut out. needlessly!

partner T-bird decides she wants to go back and wade in the Bear River. At this stage of life,... Tracks of the StoneBear stops and wades in a lot of rivers/ streams. It's good. Try it.

Well, a misjudged "T" turn at a side road... stop,... back up into tthe sideroad,... then turn back.... malfunctioned. T-bird is half way in the middle of the main hwy 150... can't make the whole turn.... backs up ... straddled now center lane. And I look up and here is a big Ford f-350 w/ loaded trailer coming straight at us. Fast. like 60+mph... T-bird can't get the shift lever right-- a new rental car-- and we're dead in the middle of a truck bearing down. It's like... this is going to be bad... maybe fatal. T-bpne broadside bad. That bad. No joke.

I get the shift lever into drive... and we move forward a few feet. The big truck is screeching rubber trying to stop... and goes by. Ther emay have been a few inches clearance... I don't know. It was real close.

We drove a couple hundred yards back up to the Bear River ranger station and parked. I got out and reviewd my life for a couple of minutes. Then got back in the drivers seat and have been there ever since on ALL road trips.

Driving up the beautiful ranches of Utah... into Evanston , Wyoming... I knew in town that if the truck driver spotted our car; he would have whipped my ass in the parking lot. And I'd have taken it. It was that close.

Motel in evanston. At Spencers resturaunt had my 1st taste of buffalo. Wild taste... interesting. What a 1st day. I'm just glad to be here. Really. No joke!
